[Elantra GT] '02 Hatchback will not open

DON'T KNOW HO0W THIS GOT DIRECTLY TO ME, BUT I'VE GOT AN 02 AND O3 SO I KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.  THERE IS A VERTICAL ROD CONNECTING THE DOOR HANDLE TO THE LATCH MECHANISM.  LOWER THE REAR SEATS, CRAWL INTO THE TRUNK, REMOVE THE MIDDLE PORT COVER ON THE INSIDE OF THE HATCH PANEL, AND UNCLIP THE ROD FROM THE HANDLE AT THE LITTLE PLASTIC BUSHING, AND THEN PULL UP ON THE ROD.  LATCH SHOULD OPEN.  
THEN YOU'VE GOT TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS.

Boy I have to say, in four years I have had no issues 139,000 with only consumables so far.

Hatch locks and unlocks with the key fob but will not open.  key will not work either.  was working fine all week as I moved and had stuff in and out multi times.  Is there any release or what next.  Thanks very much
